Michael Caine is ninety years old today. We’ve already reviewed A Bridge too Far, The Battle of Britain, Dunkirk, The Eagle Has Landed, Play Dirty and Too Late the Hero. We haven’t gotten around to reviewing Victory, Foxhole in Cairo, The Two-Headed Spy, and When Lions Roared.
He is probably my favorite–in part because I happen to like the movies he’s in, but more because he’s just plain good at acting. In a review of the movie Gambit, Andrew Saris of the Village Voice wrote, “Caine continues providing the divine function of a star in redeeming bad movies from deserved oblivion.” He does this in Too Late the Hero.
I woke up this morning and found out it was his birthday–I hope next year to write more and wish him a happy ninety-first birthday.
