In Praise of the Piat

The Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank Mark I, or Piat, was the primary British handheld anti-tank weapon of the Second World War, I’m guessing. This is not a history site.

It’s also become a bit of a sensation in some corners of the Internet, particularly focused on Anthony Hopkins exclaiming “Bring up the Piat!” in A Bridge Too Far, which is apparently sexier than one soldier in Theirs Is the Glory asking his commanding officer, “Can I have a shot at it with the Piat, sir?” and the reply of,  “Okay—Off you go.”

Here’s a video from someone who has apparently seen Southpark discussing the development and use of the Piat.

Here’s a video from The Armourer’s Bench that focuses on the use of Piats in two movies in today’s spotlight.

This is all a cheap ruse to put together two important movies about Operation Market Garden, one you certainly know about and one you may not. And The Longest Day is cool, too, and It totally has a Piat in it for, like, ten seconds.
